Downloads from the Lord: The Spoken Word, Part Two

My wife Shirley laid a note on my desk a couple days ago and told me it was a little saying about words. She thought I might be able to use it in my Tuesday blog post since I’m writing about our words. I want to share it with you before we talk about anything else.

Words of Wisdom:
Don’t mix bad words with your bad mood. You’ll have many opportunities to change a mood, but never get the opportunity to replace the words you spoke.

That is so true. Once a word is uttered it can never be shoved back in our mouth as if it was never said. The Bible says it like this:

Proverbs 11:9 (MSG)
9 The loose tongue of the godless spreads destruction; the common sense of the godly preserves them.

As I’m writing this, I am struck by the far-reaching power and implications of the words I speak. I must admit that I rarely stop to consider whether they will create positive or negative results. These results can have either short-term or long-term outcomes.

Here is a diagram that illustrates the powerful consequences of our words:

So, let’s go in reverse on this:
If I’m not happy with my Destiny, I will need to change my Character.
If I’m not happy with my Character, I will need to change my Habits.
If I’m not happy with my Habits, I will need to change my Actions.
If I’m not happy with my Actions, I will need to change my Decisions.
If I’m not happy with my Decisions, I will need to change my Feelings / Emotions.
If I’m not happy with my Feelings / Emotions, I will need to change my Beliefs.
If I’m not happy with my Beliefs, I will need to change my Words.

Wow! It all goes back to our Words!

It would be impossible to change in any area without first changing my Words. Let’s choose Decisions for instance. I would have to change the way I talk about something (either spoken or thought) before my Feelings/Emotions about a situation would change, therefore changing my Decision making ability. Once again…WOW!

I sure hope you were able to follow that.   🤦‍♂️🤪 LOL

Check out this light-hearted saying about our words. Hope you enjoy it:

Next post we will explore more of what the Bible has to say about our words.
