Chapter 3 – What are some ways the Holy Spirit speaks to Christians?
Have you had a chance to read last week’s post? I trust that you appreciated the account of how the Holy Spirit chastised me for abbreviating His name. He spoke to me about how I was not treating Him with as much respect as I treated the Father and the Son (Jesus). That was forty years ago, and still to this day, I’m very careful to treat the Holy Spirit with the respect He deserves.
After talking about conversations with the Holy Spirit, I did a little research into the various ways the Holy Spirit can speak to us as Christians. I ran across this article, and I believe it is very informative. So… I’m sharing it in this post. I would love to hear your thoughts about it. It was written by Lisa Z. Dean. Thank you Lisa.
Ways the Holy Spirit Speaks to Christians
The Holy Spirit speaks to Christians primarily through the Bible, inward impressions, and circumstances to guide, convict, and encourage. Common ways include: illuminating scripture, a “still, small voice” or conscience, peaceful assurance, godly counsel from others, and divine reminders of Jesus’ words.
- Through the Bible (Scripture): The Spirit highlights specific verses or passages to provide direction or answers to prayer.
- Inward Impressions or Conviction: A profound sense of peace regarding a decision (or lack there of) or a direct nudge in one’s conscience to do good or turn from sin.
- Still, Small Voice: An internal, calm, and quiet communication, often described as a soft voice or sudden thought that aligns with God’s word.
- Other Christians/Wisdom: Godly advice, prophecy, or encouragement offered by believers in community.
- Circumstantial Directives: The Holy Spirit may arrange, close, or open doors, or use situations to guide a person’s path.
- Dreams and Visions: Scripture and historical accounts suggest the Spirit can communicate through vivid dreams or internal visions.
- Reminding of Jesus’ Words: Bringing specific truths to mind when needed most for comfort or
decision-making.
Synonyms for the Holy Spirit’s Voice
- Inward witness: An internal, quiet assurance or a “knowing” in one’s spirit (Romans 8:16).
- Conviction of Sin/Righteousness: A persistent prompting to align behavior with God’s will.
- The gentle nudge: A gentle, persistent inner urge.
- Impression: A thought or feeling that feels “impressed” upon the mind or heart.
- Illumination: The act of the Spirit clarifying, or making a scripture verse suddenly clear and applicable.
How to Recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit
- It aligns with Scripture: The Spirit will never contradict the Bible.
- It produces “fruit”: Guidance that leads to love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
- It glorifies Jesus: The focus is always on Jesus, not self.
- It is peaceful, not panicky: Often described as a calm inner peace, unlike the frantic nature of panic or fear.
