Chapter 3 – Jesus is The Word of God!!

Let’s begin with the fact that Jesus is the Word of God! He is the second person of the trinity. God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit.

John 1:1–4 (NLT)
1In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He existed in the beginning with God. 3God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. 4The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.

John 1:14 (NLT)
14So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

How do I get to know Jesus? There are two basic ways to know Him more fully: Pray and read the Word, which is the Bible! Since Jesus is the Word of God, reading the Word is literally hearing directly from Him!!! Prayer allows you to talk with Him and ask Him questions. Wow!!! What a privilege to talk with and hear from God the Son!!!

As far as prayer is concerned, think of it as talking to a friend. Remember the wonderful hymn of the Church, “What a friend we have in Jesus?” It is still just as true today as it was when the hymn was written by Joseph M. Scriven in 1855! Set aside time each day to talk with Jesus, just as you would with your best friend… HE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!

What version of the Bible should I be reading and studying? A general rule of thumb would be to use a direct translation from the original Greek and Hebrew. A few versions that I use and would recommend are: New Living Translation (NLT), New International Version (NIV), New King James Version (NKJV) and English Standard Version (ESV). The Message (MSG) is a paraphrased version in today’s language. It is not a direct translation but is considered to be a good supplemental source for increased understanding.

  • You can use a traditional paper Bible. They are tried and true and have stood the test of time. Some of my friends like the feel of a real book in their hands.
  • Or… you can use an electronic version for phone, tablet, or computer. I use the electronic Bible app from “YouVersion.” All of the Bible versions I listed, and more, are available on “YouVersion.” Best of all… IT’S FREE! I might mention that you can make donations if you choose to, but it’s
not required. I use it on my phone and that way I always have it with me wherever and whenever I want it. Jesus has become more of a real friend to me since I started using the “YouVersion,” Bible app. I recommend it highly!

I sincerely hope this helps you get to know Jesus in a deeper, more intimate way. He is the Word of God and the Son of God! He is God who took human form and died to make atonement for our sins!

John 3:16 (NLT)
16“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

The Apostle Paul wrote the following in a letter to the church in Thessalonica:

1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NLT)
13Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God—which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.
