Chapter 26 – Jesus is the Firm Foundation.
On the west wall of our basement, we had a crack in our foundation that went from the top of our basement wall to the floor. It was about 6 and a half feet from the southwest corner. (Check out the picture.)

We could actually feel cold air from the outside coming in through the crack. There was also a crack in the south wall, about 35 feet from that same southwest corner. We realized that it needed to be checked out, so we called Foundation Recovery Systems. They sent out Tanner, and he checked our entire basement wall with a laser level. He found that the only area that wasn’t level was that southwest corner. It was good to know that the rest of our basement was level. Tanner told us that it was very common to have what he called “sister cracks” when a corner of a foundation sinks. Our corner was down more than a quarter of an inch. That was enough to cause the cracks.
As I am typing this blog post, three guys from Foundation Recovery Systems are working on the foundation of our home. They are installing seven foundation jacks with the first and last jack just beyond each of the two cracks. Installing the jacks is quite a process. Here is the process as I understand it:
- They dig a hole, by hand, to the bottom of the foundation at each jack location.
- Using a hydraulic fixture, they push 3-foot sections of galvanized steel pipe on down to bedrock, a section at a time. I commented that it was kind of a like watching the guys on an oil rig add section after section to the drill shaft as it goes deeper in the ground. They said they have heard that more than once.
- The pressure readings on their hydraulic driver indicated bedrock for ours was at 22 feet.
- An L type bracket is then installed under the foundation and rests on the “bedrock solid steel pipe.”
- After water proofing, and final height adjustments, the hole is ready to backfill. (Check out these three pictures.)

Other than some minor landscaping to do next spring, and a hole in our checkbook, our foundation is now secure!!! Wow, our foundation is now secure!!! That has a good, positive ring to it. Then my mind went to work! It’s a comforting feeling to know the foundation of my earthly, physical home is solid. Then I had to ask myself, “Is the foundation of my Heavenly home solid?” So, I did a little research and found a lot about my Spiritual Foundation:
Luke 6:46–49 (ESV)
46“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
Hebrews 11:8–10 (ESV)
8By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
1 Corinthians 3:10–15 (ESV)
10According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. 11For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. 14If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
Ephesians 2:12–22 (ESV)
12remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
I did a little inventory, said a little prayer, and thanked the Lord for showing me that I am on the Solid Foundation of the Lord Jesus Christ!
I feel very blessed that as of now, my home here is on a solid foundation, and my home in Heaven is on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ!
Thank You Lord that You are the “Solid Foundation” that we can build eternal life on! In the name of Jesus! Amen.
