Chapter 2 – Why more information regarding the Holy Spirit?

At the end of last week’s post, I promised I would share more in future posts concerning the Holy Spirit and how He wants to help us. Let’s start by talking about who the Holy Spirit is:

God is three individuals who together make-up one God. God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is one of the three individuals and at the same time, fully God. The Holy Spirit made this concept very clear to me many years ago. This is what happened:

Many years ago, back before computers came on the scene, I was sitting at our dining room table putting the finishing touches on a Sunday School lesson in long hand on paper. I was almost finished, but I was running out of space on my paper, and I didn’t want to use a brand-new sheet. For the very few words left, I started writing real small and up the edge of the paper finishing with H.S. to stand for Holy Spirit. At that point a loud, booming voice spoke to my mind. It was so loud and so powerful that it startled me. It was almost like someone was standing behind me and hovering over me.

The voice said, “What did you just write!?” I knew immediately what it was referring to, and I said “H.S.” I may have even said it out loud. The voice, still loud and still booming, responded with, “Would you have written J.C.!?” To which I responded “no.” The voice then said, “Why not!?” I responded, “I have too much respect for Jesus Christ.” The voice, still loud and still booming, responded with, “I too am God!” At that point, my encounter with the Holy Spirit ended.

This account of my conversation with the Holy Spirit took place somewhere around 1986. That would make it around 40 years ago. As I typed this, the amazing thing is… it was just as real to me as the day it took place. My wife Shirley asked me if I enjoyed reliving it? I replied, “I guess when you have a person-to-person conversation with the Holy Spirit, it’s not something you easily forget.”

John 14:15–17 (NLT)

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

This Bible passage from John 14 is a beautiful picture of God the Father on His throne in Heaven, and Jesus interceding for us. Jesus is making sure that we are not left abandoned but have the guarantee of the Holy Spirit. If we receive Jesus as our Savior, we have that assurance of the Holy Spirit living in us. He will lead us into all truth and never leave us!

Romans 10:9–10 (NLT)

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.

The Holy Spirit’s rebuke to me about my lackadaisical attitude toward Him was a real wake-up call. Consequently, my relationship with Him through the years has been one of great respect for who He is and what He does in our lives!

More about the Holy Spirit and all He does for us in future blog posts.
