Chapter 37 – Jesus Cares about the Minor Things in our Lives!

In last week’s blog post I talked about the fact that in this life we experience storms of many kinds. There are large storms, and storms that are not so large. There are actual weather storms, and there are emotional storms. I also mentioned the fact that there are minor physical storms. Today I would like to provide an update on the three specific storms I mentioned:

  • Weather storms:

As I was writing last week’s blog post, we were under a severe storm warning for the Cedar Rapids area. The words “possible derecho” for Cedar Rapids, brought back all kinds of vivid memories of the violent derecho we experienced back on August 10, 2020! Here is what happened:

       –     My wife Shirley and I, as I’m sure many residents of Cedar Rapids, went to prayer for the Lord’s protection and no derecho! The storm reduced in intensity and split in half. Half went to the North of us, and half to the South. Praise the Lord! Cedar Rapids sure didn’t need another derecho!

  • Emotional storms:

I talked about attending the funeral service for our good friend. For the family members and close friends, it was a time of remembering, talking together, and sadness. This is how the Lord brought a sense of peace through it all:

       –     The Holy Spirit provided a very comforting presence during, the most difficult of all storms… the funeral of a loved one. Many precious thoughts and memories were shared. His relationship with the Lord gave family and friends the assurance that he is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thank You Lord for that assurance in the midst of the storm!

  • Minor physical storms:

I also shared that the previous evening, we were running a load of clothes in the washer when we discovered there was water all over the laundry room floor. I indicated that although it is minor when compared to the other storms, let me assure you… it is none the less a storm! His involvement in this minor storm truly was a blessing to me! Here is what transpired:

      –     In trying to determine where the water was leaking from, I ran a wash cycle. Water came from the

stand pipe that the drain hose goes into, when the washer drained. That indicated to me that there was a clogged drain pipe. I turned off the water and the washer, and poured drain cleaner in the drain.

After a half hour, I tried to run another washer cycle, however, the drain was still clogged. I let it sit awhile longer and tried the washer again. The washer made a terrible noise, and I realized that I hadn’t turned the water back on. After I turned the water back on, I could not get the washer to work. I thought, “oh no! Now I broke the washer!” I thought I had damaged the washer’s water pump or the electronics circuit. Because it was close to the weekend, we decided to clean-up the water and call a plumber and a washer repair person on Monday.

On Monday morning I contacted Roto-Rooter and they sent a young man named Austin right out to unclog the drain. He ran the Roto-Rooter snake through the pipe and said, “that takes care of the clog, it should be fine now.” To which I responded, “it’s too bad that the washer is not working or we could run a cycle to make sure the drain is open.” Austin said, “let me take a look at the washer. It sounds like it’s trying to drain but there isn’t any water in it to drain.” He then pushed a couple buttons and told me to watch it to see if it will reset. About that time, it reset and started to work. When it drained, the water went right down the drain without any leaks.

We wrote Austin a check and gave him a nice tip for fixing the washer. It wasn’t until he was gone that I remembered my prayer at church on Sunday: “Lord would You please send us an angel who knows how to fix a clothes washer, and can also unclog a drain.”

Thank You Jesus for sending an angel named Austin to calm our storm!!! Amen.

2Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

  1. Well said Mike. God is ALWAYS faithful and answers our prayers as long as we ask. What a great testament for us to put God first in EVERYTHING we do. So many times we ( especially as men) try to do it all by ourselves. So many times just complicating the issue. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Thanks Mike for sharing about all your storms and for how the Lord was with you through them all! Very happy to hear that all things turned out well for you concerning the washer also!😁
