Chapter 36 – Jesus Calms the Storms of Life!

In this life we experience storms of many kinds. There are large storms and storms that are not so large. There are actual weather storms, and there are emotional storms.

  • Weather storms:

As I am writing this week’s blog post, we are under a severe storm warning for a large portion of the Midwest. Cedar Rapids, Iowa is projected to be right in the path of the storm. I even heard a weather man mention the words “possible derecho.” For those of us in Cedar Rapids, the word derecho brings back all kinds of vivid memories of the violent derecho we experienced back on August 10, 2020!

  • Emotional storms:

Today we attended the funeral service for the good friend I talked about in last week’s post. For the family members and close friends, it was a time of remembering, talking together, and sadness. It is a time when you realize you will no longer be seeing and enjoying life with the this cherished loved one!

  • Minor physical storms:

Last evening, we were running a load of clothes in the washer when something happened, and the next thing we knew there was water all over the basement room floor. This one is still to be resolved. It is minor when compared to the other storms, but let me assure you… it is none the less a storm!

So, what do we do when we encounter storms of any size or nature? If you have been following my blog posts, or you saw the title of this post, you can probably figure out where I will be going with this. Yes… you are correct! Let’s see what the Bible has to say regarding the storms of life:

John 16:29–33 (NLT)
29Then his disciples said, “At last you are speaking plainly and not figuratively. 30Now we understand that you know everything, and there’s no need to question you. From this we believe that you came from God.” 31Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe? 32But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. 33I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.

Jesus assures us that we can trust in Him to be with us through any of the trials and sorrows (storms) we go through in this life!

Mark 4:35–41 (NLT)
35As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” 36So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). 37But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. 38Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” 39When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!

Thank You Jesus for being our anchor in the midst of the storm!!! Amen.
